Why Long Covid is a workplace issue
Long Covid can present significant challenges in the workplace, prevalence rates for Long Covid are greatest in the working age population (35-69 years) the symptoms can be many and varied, both physical and psychological.
An estimated 1.8 million people in the UK - 3% of the population - are experiencing ongoing symptoms known as ‘long COVID’. Studies have put the extra cost to UK GP and other primary care services at an estimated £23m a year - with annual losses to the workforce and greater economic cost thought to be as much as £1.5bn.
50% of employers report employees who have experienced, or are experiencing, ‘long COVID’ (i.e. symptoms lasting 12 weeks or more) in the last 12 months, up slightly from 46% last year. This may underestimate the issue as not all employees with the condition report their symptoms and a fifth of respondents didn’t know whether any employees had long COVID symptoms.
